At the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), they’re rightfully proud of their unique role, because what they do matters. They save lives, prevent causalities, and ensure safety at sea. Thousands of people rely on their 24-hour emergency service 365 days a year, and their international presence extends far beyond the UK. But their work isn’t limited to search and rescue – the MCA’s roles span the coastguard, pollution response, marine surveying and maritime security. Everything the MCA do is underpinned by their aim to become the best maritime safety organisation in the world – join them and help protect people at sea and our marine environment.
This is your chance to do something that matters
As the Deputy Director Major Commercial, you will play a key leadership role in the MCA’s Commercial Directorate which covers all commercial and programme delivery activity in the MCA. It is the home of the MCA’s aviation delivery and programme teams, the MCA’s procurement function, and any major programme or acquisition with a whole life cost of more than £20m.
Today all search and rescue helicopters operate under Her Majesty’s Coastguard brand and are operated on behalf of the MCA by Bristow Helicopters Ltd worth £1.6bn. In addition to its search and rescue capabilities the MCA is implementing a pan-Government aerial surveillance capability, as well as the development of a new modern aviation solution to the treatment of pollution on the water. It is further engaged in the development of drone technology. These are commercially sourced solutions that need strong commercial and programme oversight in their delivery.
In addition to aviation delivery, there are many commercially delivered programmes which are on the MCA’s horizon, including the replacement of its Coastguard communications and command & control systems together with many dozens of critical services and products the MCA is due to procure and manage over the coming years. This is an exciting time to join the team and make a difference.
Alongside exceptional leadership skills the successful candidate will have a background in the management of major commercial contracts and the successful delivery of programmes. You must be able to skilfully negotiate contracts whilst providing leadership and strategic direction to your multi-disciplined team.
