InFocus: Board Practice

16/08/2016
It’s time now to turn our minds to a UK post Brexit – and make a success of it.  This edition of InFocus picks up some relevant post Brexit themes including the opportunity presented for English wine as well as an overview of the China market.
Plural roles in the boardroom

The Bank of England are demonstrating their commitment at keeping the economy as stable as possible and, whatever our personal views, we need to deliver on the referendum outcome and show the rest of Europe it was the right decision.

One client in the restaurant sector we recently spoke to said, “We have seen a bounce in trade since the vote – most of our sites are outside of London so perhaps that’s telling! However, as we move into Autumn and beyond, I have no doubt there will be a negative shock to our economy and to our sector in particular but we are prepared for that”.

Longer term, good operators and well-funded businesses will see opportunities arise, be it in site affordability or strategic M&A and so on. Another client commented, “Businesses cannot afford to get caught up in the hysteria. They need to hold their nerve and continue to invest in the UK”.

The Government appears to be taking time to get a plan for post Brexit in place; UK Sport took a strategic view and invested National Lottery and Exchequer funds in those sports where it felt the best chance of success lay – not all decisions were popular – but they appear to have got a lot right.

This edition of InFocus picks up some relevant post Brexit themes including the opportunity presented for English wine as well as an overview of the China market – “Is it hot or cold?” We also feature a fine contribution from Stuart Metcalfe on Brand or 3rd party management partner selection. We are grateful to all our contributors, and we hope you enjoy reading.
